Orange County Kitchen Slide Out Shelves
What you should know BEFORE you buy Rollout Shelves for your kitchen cabinets.
Whether they are called Rollout, Pullout, Slideout or Glideout Shelves, you are making a wise choice to add these to your kitchen and pantry cabinets. If you are like most people who have them, you will never want to be without them again!
Not only will these Rollout Shelves provide much more efficient use of your storage space, they will save the strain on your back and knees when searching for those items way in the back of the cabinet. And, having Rollout Shelves in your kitchen and pantry cabinets will significantly enhance the resale appeal of your home when it comes time to sell.
Now what are the key considerations you should know when choosing to buy Rollout Shelves?
1. Should these be installed by a professional or by yourself?
2. What is the quality of their design and manufacture?
3. Are these Rollout Shelves your BEST VALUE?
1. Installation
You must first decide if you are willing and able to install these Rollout Shelves or if you will have these installed by a professional.
If opt for professional installation, then you simply have to factor this cost into your decision as to whether these Rollout Shelves are the Best Value for you.
If you want to install yourself, the most important question to be answered is:
How hard is it to install these Rollout Shelves and are you confident that you can do it?
Key considerations regarding installation:
In order for the Rollout Shelf to roll in and out smoothly, the rails (or glides) need to be nearly perfectly aligned. That means that the left rail needs to be parallel and level with the right rail. This can be difficult to do since the space inside the cabinet is often small, tight, dark and deep.
Every DIY Rollout Shelf offering on the Internet has its own approach on how to attach these rails to the cabinet. There are two general approaches: attach the rails onto the sidewalls of the cabinet or onto the existing cabinet shelves and bottom. Of these two approaches, attaching the rails onto the cabinet shelf or bottom is much easier and results in a stronger installation.
It is particularly challenging to attach the rails to the left and right sidewalls such that these two are perfectly aligned. And you often have to add spacer blocks or pieces of wood to shim-out the side rails so they pass by the sides of the face frame cabinet opening.
Attaching the supporting rails to the cabinet shelf or bottom is inherently easier to do since you are working on a flat surface versus the vertical sidewalls. However, you still need to attach these rails onto the cabinet shelf or floor so that they are parallel and correctly spaced.
The Rollout Shelf offerings today seem to offer two ways to correctly position these rails onto the cabinet shelf or floor.
One way is to install the left rail first and then use the Rollout Drawer Box to position the right rail correctly. Then, you gradually adjust the position of the right rail until the Drawer Box rolls out smoothly. This can often require several tries and adjustments of the screws.
Another method that is much easier and more accurate is also available. With this approach, the Rollout Shelf comes with the bottom rails attached to each other and are perfectly aligned at the factory. Then, all you need to do to install these is to position this âinstallation trackâ in the center of the opening and simply screw it onto the cabinet shelf or floor.
Another reason you might prefer to install your Rollout Shelf onto the cabinet shelf or floor is that it typically results in a much stronger installation than attaching the rails to the cabinet sidewalls. This is due to the likelihood that your cabinet sidewalls are probably made of âpressed woodâ which does not hold screws very well when under stress. You probably have had screws pull out of Ready-To-Assemble furniture (like from IKEA) which has been made from âpressed woodâ. So, rails attached to the sidewalls can sometimes come loose over time due to the weight and movement of the Rollout Shelf. However, when you attach the rails onto the cabinet shelf or floor, the weight is pressing down onto the rails and the shelf or floor.
The last consideration regarding DIY installation is whether the Rollout Shelf is shipped âFully Assembledâ or needs to be assembled prior to installation. There are a few providers of Rollout Shelves that save cost by shipping the Rollout as a collection of many parts and hardware. The homeowner has to build the box, attach the hardware to the box and then install these into their cabinets. There are many downsides to this approach but the most serious one is that the box that results from this âbuild-it-yourselfâ method is often not strong nor square, two serious flaws in any Rollout Shelf.
2. Quality of the design and manufacture
As noted above, the Rollout Drawer Box must be perfectly square for it to roll smoothly every time. And, the Drawer Box must be very strong since it will hold up to 100 lbs and will be moved back and forth 100âs of times.
There are many ways that Rollout Drawer Boxes are made. Many smaller companies make their Drawer Boxes in small workshops or even in their garages. Other companies have larger manufacturing facilities that use state-of-the-art computer-controlled machinery. Both types of companies are able to make a perfectly square Drawer Box.
However, the larger companies that use computer-controlled machinery are able to do so every time, having tolerances as low as hundredths of an inch!
Another very important consideration is the kind of joinery that is used to construct the Drawer Box since it will have to support the weight and its front piece will be repeatedly pulled forward.
There are essentially three types of joinery used by most Rollout Shelf manufacturers to connect the [4] corners of the Drawer Box: nail and glue, dowel and glue or dovetailed joinery. Of these three, most people will agree that the dovetailed method results in the strongest Drawer Box.
Why donât all Rollout Shelf manufacturers use dovetail joinery?
Dovetail joinery requires specialized and costly machinery to efficiently manufacture Drawer Boxes. Smaller companies often cannot cost-justify this expense. However, with higher volumes being manufactured, the cost of dovetail joinery is not much more than the cost of the other two types of joinery and results in a superior product.
Next, you need to decide on the type of wood that is used to make the Drawer Box:
-Melamine (pressed wood) is the least expensive, is very âstableâ (meaning that it does not expand from moisture) but it doesnât hold screws well and is heavy.
-Natural wood (solid) is light weight, holds screws strongly but is more costly and can be prone to âbowingâ from moisture.
-Natural wood (ply) is light weight, holds screws strongly, is very straight and not prone to âbowingâ from moisture and is âmid-rangeâ in cost.
Most of the Rollout Shelves sold today are made from 9 ply Birch as this material offers the best balance of cost and advantages.
However, one shortcoming of using 9 ply Birch is that the top edges of the Drawer Box are the âexposedâ edges of the ply. Over time, from repeated handling, this top edge can absorb grime and hand oils. Once that happens, it can not be removed.
Some Rollout Drawer Boxes have their top edges âbandedâ with a ½â wood-toned vinyl strip. This âedge bandingâ keeps the Drawer Box clean forever and gives the appearance of solid wood. This edge banding is typically applied with advanced, super-strong adhesives by computer-controlled machinery so that it lasts forever and does not appreciably add to the manufacturing cost. As a result, this feature is generally only offered by the larger volume manufacturers of Rollout Shelves.
3. Best Value
Lastly, after considering all of these manufacturing and design factors, it is now up to you to determine your âBest Valueâ Rollout Shelf.
-âValueâ is defined as the combination of quality/features/advantages and the price.
- There is a Low-Medium-High range of quality and prices for Rollout Shelves.
- You now know how to evaluate the range of quality and features.
- The current price range for Rollout Shelves is from around $35 to $150 per Rollout plus shipping and/or installation.
- I think that you will find that, as with most things, the âBest Valueâ tends to be with a purchase made in the Medium price range which often offers the best balance of quality and price.
However, that is your decision to make.
